Collective Measures
WalkAbout is the SpanSet brand of collective measures for access and safety when working at height, including aerial work platforms. The WalkAbout range is complementary to SpanSet’s personal fall protection range and the SpanSet Safeline range of fixed safety systems. Collective measures can provide options only surpassed in terms of safety by avoidance. Whilst avoiding working at height is desirable, the modern industrial and urban environment demands ever more exposure especially with our need for continual development.
Collective measures, once in place should provide workers with a similar working environment to that when working at ground level, with no fall hazards. The ability to do so in a technical sense is only part of the solution. A worker protected from a fall hazard who still feels a sense of exposure is unlikely to operate in as relaxed a manner as they would at ground level. The WalkAbout range aims to add that important sense of security to the aerial work platform, providing the worker with improved safety and environment.
The use of innovative materials and design, combined with SpanSet’s experience in personal fall protection and training for working at height have resulted in a unique range of solutions. The developments so far have provided new takes for existing problems, but have also helped to identify further areas for the future. The WalkAbout range will therefore continue to be a work in progress.
When looking at collective measures SpanSet have taken the approach of assessing the whole problem, to arrive at a solution that lowers the overall risk to everyone involved. We felt it was far too common for solutions providing safe working conditions for the end user to do so by accepting high risks for the installer. The concept of assessing the combined risks may question some traditional approaches, but offers opportunities for well planned and designed solutions such as WalkAbout.
